Mauritius Wildlife

Mauritius is a beautiful island for people who love nature and animals! The Mauritius wildlife includes a wide variety that are only found in Mauritius and opportunities to see them are abundant.

Best locations for spotting interesting fauna:

Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens

Curepipe Botanical Gardens

Casela Yemen Nature Park

Ile aux Aigrettes

La Vanille Crocodile Park

Black River Gorges National Park

Domaine du Chasseur

Mauritius Parakeet

Mauritius doesn’t have a good history of saving animal species (anyone seen a Dodo lately), however over the last 30 years this has all changed. The Mauritius Wildlife Foundation in conjunction with the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust has invested some serious effort in bringing several species back from the brink of extinction.

There are ten common bird species on the island of Mauritius and nine of them are classed as a threatened species! There are a further two on the island of Rodrigues and they are also both a threatened species.

Mautirius Kestrel

Mauritius Parakeet

Pink Pigeon

Mauritius Fody

Paradise Flycatcher

Cuckoo Shrike

Grey White-Eye

Olive White-eye

Black Bulbul / Mauritius Merle

Rodrigues Warbler

Yellow Fody / Rodrigues Fody

Click on any of the links above for more information about these animals and where they can be found!
